Anastrozole is a widely available aromatase inhibitor which prevents the conversion of testosterone to estrogen in men and women. Initially approved by the FDA for treatment of hormonally responsive breast cancer in women, it is now also frequently used to lower estrogen levels in men and improve the testosterone/estrogen ratio and improve male fertility and sometime sexual function.

In the context of testosterone replacement therapy, anastrozole may be used to blunt any estrogen spikes which may contribute to gynecomastia and fluid retention. 

Anastrozole has a long half life so can typically be used once weekly.
